Modelling of moulded hole load-carrying mechanisms in GFRP composites with the use of a two-phase material model

Type: article
Abstract: Moulded holes have the potential to improve the strength of bolted joining of fibre-reinforced plastic composites if they are used instead of drilled holes. Therefore, a novel two-phase material model was used to model effectively load-carrying mechanisms of moulded holes. The model was used for modelling open-hole testing of drilled and moulded holes made in glass/epoxy composite. The results of the two-phase material model were validated numerically against the orthotropic material model used commonly for modelling drilled holes in fibre-reinforced composites and experimentally against digital image correlation results. The use of the two-phase material model allowed to discover load-carrying mechanisms around the moulded holes and predict their failure mechanisms.
