The impact of Pecha Kucha on enhancing basic life support training: randomized controlled trial
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Clinical Trial
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Basic Life Support (BLS) is essential for saving lives, yet traditional teaching methods may not ensure lasting learning. Pecha Kucha, a dynamic and visual presentation style, has been suggested to boost engagement and retention. This study aimed to determine the effect of Basic Life Support (BLS) training given with the Pecha Kucha (PK) method on the level of learning and practicing Basic Life Support among students studying health services. METHODS: A randomized controlled study was conducted according to the CONSORT guideline. This randomized controlled pretest-posttest study included 120 students receiving first-aid courses. Data were collected using a descriptive characteristics form, which was created by the researchers in line with the literature, and the “BLS Skills Questionnaire”. The forms were applied before, shortly after, and 4 weeks after practicing PK. RESULTS: It was determined that the level of knowledge and practice in the PK group significantly increased shortly after the training and one month after the training compared to the pre-training period. When the levels of knowledge and practice scores before, after, and one month after the training were compared within the group, it was found that there was a significant change in the mean scores of the PK group. CONCLUSIONS: Pecha Kucha significantly improved BLS knowledge and skills, with effects lasting up to one month. This method offers a powerful and lasting impact on learning—making it a valuable tool for BLS training. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (trial registration number: NCT06213961; registered on March 27, 2024).
