Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: OBJECTIVES: This study examines coping mechanisms that mitigate anxiety in nursing home workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on resilience, life satisfaction, and sense of coherence. METHODS: A cross-sectional design included 449 nursing home professionals in Puerto Rico. Participants completed validated questionnaires assessing life satisfaction, resilience, the three dimensions of sense of coherence, and anxiety symptoms. Data were collected online using snowball sampling. Multiple linear regression identified significant predictors of anxiety. RESULTS: Significant negative associations were found between anxiety and all three psychological variables. Life satisfaction and meaningfulness showed the strongest inverse relationships with anxiety. Resilience also played a significant protective role. The models explained a substantial portion of variance in anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: Promoting resilience, life satisfaction, and sense of coherence is important to reduce anxiety in high-stress healthcare contexts. Targeted interventions to enhance these factors could improve mental health outcomes and the quality of care for older adults.
