Abstract: AIM: Evaluating the impact of conditioning protocols, i.e., Airborne-particle abrasion (APA), Femtosecond lasers (FS), Chlorine p6 (Clp6) activated low-level laser therapy, and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HANPs) on contact angle (CA), surface roughness (Ra), and repair bond strength (RBS) of yttria-stabilized polycrystalline tetragonal zirconia (3Y-TZP) to composite. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Fifty-two zirconia discs (3Y-TZP) were obtained and categorized into four groups according to the surface conditioning methods (n = 13). Group 1: APA, Group 2: FS, Group 3: Clp6 activated LLLT, and Group 4: HANPs. The Ra and CA measurements were conducted employing a profilometer and Krüss Easy Drop apparatus, respectively. Resin Composite stubs were built on ten 3Y-TZP discs from each group and artificially aged. RBS and failure mode assessment were performed using a universal testing apparatus and a stereomicroscope, respectively. A one-way ANOVA along with the post hoc Tukey test was employed to compare the outcomes of CA, Ra, and RBS (p˂0.05). RESULTS: The highest mean Ra score (1206.74 ± 0.068 µm), maximum RBS (10.36±0.47 MPa), and lowest CA (8.87 ± 1.1) were exhibited by Group 4 (HANPs) samples. Conversely, Group 3 (Clp6-LLLT) treated 3Y-TZP discs presented the lowest Ra (795.60 ± 0.098 µm), minimum bond scores (8.65±0.57 MPa), and highest water CA (35.24 ± 3.3). Comparative analysis discovered that Group 1 (APA), Group 2 (FS), and Group 4 displayed comparable scores of Ra, CA, and RBS (p˃0.05). CONCLUSION: Hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and femtosecond laser can be considered as a suitable alternative to air particle abrasion in improving the repair bond strength of 3Y-TZP to composite by enhancing surface roughness and lowering water contact angle.
