Abstract: A delay in tooth eruption can be an important indication of a systemic condition altering the physiology of the craniofacial complex.Proper evaluation of delayed tooth eruption (DTE) and dental age estimation is a significant means for diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic measures.5 IntroductIonThe term eruption is derived from the Latin word erumpere, meaning "to break out," i.e., cutting of the tooth through the gum.It generally means the movement of the tooth into its functional location in the oral cavity. 1 During the child's development, sequential and agespecific events, including the emergence of primary dentition, its shedding, and the emergence of permanent dentition, are considered important milestones. The emergence of the first deciduous teeth is regarded as the most significant progressive milestone by parents. 2 Eruption is a continuous and physiologic phenomenon that concludes only with the loss of tooth and has a significant part in influencing the normal growth of the craniofacial complex.3 The word "deciduous" is derived from the Latin word meaning to fall off.Similarly, the deciduous teeth will shed like leaves of the tree and be substituted by the permanent teeth.4 Delayed eruption of the tooth is an eruption of a tooth during the period that diverges considerably from the standards established for different sexes, races, and ethnicities.Early eruption has also been observed in a few, but delayed eruption is seen often in clinical practice.A delay in the eruption of teeth can disturb the correct analysis and planning of treatment for patients requiring orthodontic treatment.Delayed eruption of teeth can have a major impact on the overall health of an individual.
