Ultrasound-guided marker implantation as a method to assist in resection of schwannomas: illustrative case

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: BACKGROUND: A cervical schwannoma originates from neural crest cells and presents as a slow-growing encapsulated mass in the lateral neck. OBSERVATIONS: A 30-year-old man presented with arm numbness after thyroid cancer surgery 10 years earlier. Ultrasound revealed a solid mass in the left interscalene space. Prior to surgical intervention, ultrasound-guided marker implantation was performed to assist the surgical team in rapidly detecting the tumor. The final surgical pathology report indicated a schwannoma. LESSONS: This case demonstrates a new method for assisting the surgical team in detecting the tumor rapidly, reducing operative time and minimizing complications. https://thejns.org/doi/10.3171/CASE25455.
