A quantitative and qualitative analysis of syntactic variation in Dutch dialects

Abstract: This is an accepted article with a DOI pre-assigned that is not yet published. This paper aims to provide a parametric account of a set of morphosyntactic variation data from Dutch dialects. The analysis proceeds in two steps: first, the raw data are fed into a number of exploratory statistical techniques so as to be able to discern the main patterns and tendencies, and in a second step the outcome of the quantitative analysis is analyzed from a formal-theoretical point of view. Finally, we show how the microvariation patterns and concomitant analyses can be related to broader crosslinguistic patterns and typological generalisations throughso-called parameter hierarchies.
