Abstract: drug release, ensuring an enhanced therapeutic effect.10 However, majority of the medicated patches containing synthetic drugs such as dexamethasone and ornidazole are often unpalatable and may exhibit cross reactions with other medications, 11 stimulating an allergic reaction.12 Thus, there is a quest for an alternative natural derivative. The advantages of herbal pharmaceuticals over synthetic IntroductIonOral ulcers or recurrent aphthous stomatitis is one of the most common oral diseases affecting about 25% of the population. 1 The development of painful, recurrent, solitary, or numerous shallow ulcerations on the oral mucosa is the hallmark of this condition.Patients may also experience problems with chewing and brushing, irritation to salty, spicy foods, and a loss of appetite. The etiology of oral ulcers still remains elusive. However, it has been postulated that certain systemic diseases, hormonal changes, trauma, medications, food hypersensitivity, tobacco, and stress could be the etiological factors. 2 Currently, anesthetic gels, creams, oxygenating agents, dissolvable and nondissolvable patches, film-forming gels, and mouth rinses are the available treatment modalities for treatment of this condition, but each of these is associated with specific constraints and shortcomings.Mouth rinses and topical anesthetic gels mainly focus on pain relief without significant improvement in wound healing.Creams and gels tend to get diluted due to saliva, and thus, there is a reduced efficacy.3 This leaves the lesion exposed, rendering it vulnerable to exacerbation from trauma caused by food particles, brushing, or just mere contact with teeth. This led to the development of mucoadhesive delivery systems, including particulates, 4 tablets, 5 films, and patches.[6][7][8] Various mucoadhesive patches containing steroidal drugs have also been developed for the management of oral ulcers.9 Mucoadhesive patches are better tolerated by patients and have greater efficacy than oral solutions. The advantages are a longer residence time, localized drug delivery, and consistent
