When social inequities dictate outcomes: the multidisciplinary call of cholangiocarcinoma

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Liver-related mortality strikes hardest where deprivation is greatest. This sobering truth is powerfully illustrated by Vaz and colleagues,1 who show that even in Sweden—a country celebrated for its universal healthcare—patients with low income bear a disproportionate burden of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA). Linking Swedish registry data on household income and comorbidities in 1827 adults diagnosed with iCCA between 2011 and 2021 revealed that patients with low income had higher incidence rates, lower access to active treatment, and shorter survival.
