Comparative study of CO2 capture efficiency using sodium hydroxide and monoethanolamine solutions in a spray column

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the comparative efficiency of CO2 absorption using Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Monoethanolamine (MEA) solutions in a spray column setup. CO2 capture is a critical technology for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, and optimizing absorption processes can lead to significant improvements in environmental and economic outcomes. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of NaOH and MEA solutions under various operational conditions, including solvent concentrations, gas flow rates, CO2 concentration, solvent temperatures, and solvent volume. The results indicate that NaOH achieved its maximum efficiency of 95% at a lower concentration of 5 wt.% and a slower gas flow rate of 1.25 L/min. In contrast, MEA reached a slightly higher efficiency of 96%, but only at a higher concentration of 15 wt.% under the same flow rate conditions. The study also highlights that increasing the gas flow rate significantly reduces absorption efficiency for both solvents. While NaOH maintained high efficiencies (above 90%) at a low gas flow rate of 1.25 L/min even with variations in temperature, volume, and gas concentration, MEA showed considerable efficiency increase at the gas flow rate of 3.00 L/min with increasing solvent temperature, solvent volume, and decreasing gas concentration. The findings suggest that NaOH and MEA are promising candidates for large-scale CO2 capture applications. Additionally, the use of lower solvent concentrations for both NaOH and MEA offers benefits such as reduced energy requirements for regeneration, lower solvent degradation, and decreased operational costs. This comparative analysis provides valuable insights into optimizing CO2 absorption processes and contributes to the development of more efficient and sustainable carbon capture technologies.
