Tazkeiah as a Humanitarian Wellbeing Model: Bridging Spiritual Self-Purification, Technological Innovation, & Organizational Mental Health

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: INTRODUCTION In humanitarian and workplace settings, particularly within culturally nuanced contexts, the need for a holistic and spiritually anchored wellbeing framework is urgent. This article introduces "Tazkeiah" — an Islamic concept of self-purification — as a six-phase framework capable of transforming emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing from within. Drawing from psychological science, organizational behavior, and spiritual teachings, this article synthesizes interdisciplinary perspectives and explores practical implementation for professionals, community leaders, and humanitarian workers operating under stress. The article also highlights the importance of emotional agility, cognitive awareness, heart intelligence, identity- driven growth “EDGE”, and technological innovation in fostering sustainable wellbeing and thriving cultures.1,2 In a world facing increasing levels of psychological distress, workplace burnout, and collective trauma, especially within humanitarian and post-conflict settings, there is a pressing need to explore models of wellbeing that integrate the spiritual, emotional, cognitive, and technological dimensions of the self. Most contemporary approaches to mental health in organizations focus on symptomatic relief or cognitive-behavioral tools. However, such models may fall short in culturally rich, spiritually inclined populations where inner coherence and faith- based alignment are central to thriving. This article presents "Tazkeiah," an Arabic term for self-purification, as a transformative wellbeing model rooted in Islamic ethics, supported by psychological research and Emotion AI innovation, and operationalized for modern challenges. BACKGROUND & LITERATURE GAPS Traditional psychological frameworks, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), often overlook the layered interconnections between spirituality, identity, and emotional resilience. In contrast, research on emotional agility, cognitive bias, and heart intelligence (HeartMath Institute) points to deeper layers of awareness that can catalyze long-term behavioral change.3 Yet, these often exclude technological advancement as a supportive layer. Humanitarian contexts especially lack culturally embedded, tech-powered tools that foster holistic self- regulation.4 Tazkeiah fills this void through its six-phase journey, enhanced by digital wellbeing applications and Emotion AI capabilities developed by Larimar and implemented through Tazkeiah.5 TAZKEIAH FRAMEWORK A SIX-PHASE MODEL OF INNER & SOCIAL WELLBEING Tazkeiah presents a progressive inward-outward model structured in six interdependent phases: PHASE 1: SELF-DISCOVERY Individuals begin by reflecting on their beliefs, thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. This process involves asking critical questions like "Who am I?" and "Am I living intentionally?" It aligns with identity theories in psychology and strengthens intrapersonal awareness. PHASE 2: EMOTIONAL AGILITY This phase emphasizes recognizing, naming, and detaching from emotions without shame. Borrowing from Susan David's work, it promotes small intentional shifts (e.g., journaling, reflection) that build emotional muscle and psychological flexibility. PHASE 3: WISE MINDSET Rooted in dialectical and cognitive thinking, this stage encourages the synthesis of emotional and rational insights. It addresses mental biases, cognitive distortions, and encourages metacognitive reflection. It is key for reframing trauma and regaining agency.4 PHASE 4: HEART INTELLIGENCE Inspired by neurocardiology and spiritual tradition, this phase activates intuitive knowing and coherence. It allows individuals to harmonize their inner guidance with their values, cultivating serenity and authenticity in action. PHASE 5: EDGE Standing for Enrich, Delight, Guide, and Effort, this phase helps identify one's unique value and contributions to others. It moves individuals from passive self-awareness to active social contribution, echoing humanitarian values of service and purpose. PHASE 6: TRAJECTORY The final phase maps one’s life journey across spiritual, relational, intellectual, and joyful dimensions. It invites reflection on past, present, and envisioned future selves. This phase is a holistic recalibration of one’s direction and potential. APPLICATIONS IN HUMANITARIAN & ORGANIZATIONAL SETTINGS Tazkeiah is not just a personal development framework; it offers a structured, culturally aligned tool for leaders, educators, aid workers, and professionals in high-stress settings. Through workshops, guided journaling, digital applications (e.g., WellShift), and mentoring programs, Tazkeiah enhances self-regulation, emotional literacy, and purpose-driven leadership.6 Technology plays a key role in scaling and personalizing this impact. Larimar integrates Emotion AI to analyze biometric signals (e.g., heart rate variability, heart rate) and behavior patterns to offer real-time recommendations. Tazkeiah delivers these interventions through a spiritual and ethical lens, ensuring resonance in culturally sensitive regions. These tools allow for proactive identification of burnout, disengagement, or emotional volatility, enabling early support. Case studies from community interventions in Jordan and the Arab world reflect increased clarity, lower anxiety, and improved peer interactions following exposure to the framework and supporting digital tools. A notable example comes from Al Hussein Technical University (HTU), where a multi-cohort wellness program supported by Larimar led to measurable improvements in employee self-awareness, emotional resilience, and overall satisfaction. As Prof. Ismael Al-Hinti reflected, “If we are expecting our people to always be committed to our mission and to always come up with new ideas and initiatives, we need to make sure as an institution to pay very good attention to their wellbeing and mental resilience. This is exactly why we started working with Larimar.” According to Prof. Ismael Al-Hinti, President of HTU, “As a leader of the institution, and through the application Larimar developed, I could monitor the development of each participant and how the program was creating change with the participants in terms of satisfaction, performance, and productivity.” The university has since expanded the program and continues to partner with Larimar to embed wellbeing into its culture.7 Looking forward, one of the most promising use cases for Tazkeiah’s integrated framework lies in conflict-affected humanitarian settings. There is strong potential to combine Tazkeiah’s emotional and spiritual wellbeing model with AI- powered tools to support community health workers, strengthen maternal mental health, and build emotional resilience among displaced populations. Such applications demonstrate how the fusion of ethical AI and culturally resonant inner work can uplift not only individuals but entire communities navigating prolonged adversity.8 EVALUATION AND METRICS While conventional KPIs in workplace settings focus on productivity or engagement scores, Tazkeiah introduces agile wellbeing indicators, such as coherence, emotional vocabulary expansion, self-reported inner peace, and narrative transformation over time. Qualitative assessments (reflections, trajectory maps) combined with biometric feedback (e.g., heart rate variability and emotional sentiment analysis via Emotion AI tools by Larimar) offer a multi-modal measurement system. DISCUSSION Tazkeiah challenges the Western dichotomy between professional competence and spiritual growth. It suggests that integrated inner journeys catalyze sustainable outer change. In humanitarian contexts, where identity, loss, and trauma intertwine, Tazkeiah offers a grounded yet transcendent approach. The inclusion of Emotion AI and digital dashboards provides a scalable solution to reach remote populations or overburdened humanitarian teams. When combined with culturally responsive facilitation through platforms like Tazkeiah and Larimar, this model represents a convergence of ancient wisdom and next- generation humanitarian tech.9 CONCLUSION To thrive does not mean the absence of pain or the pursuit of happiness. It means living in alignment with one’s faith, identity, and evolving self. Tazkeiah enables this journey by bridging Islamic wisdom with contemporary wellbeing science and technological innovation. As humanitarian challenges grow, such integrative frameworks can humanize systems, renew inner capacities, and ultimately, help us thrive inwardly and collectively.
