The “Northern Ireland: Living with the Troubles” Exhibition at the Imperial War Museum: Rebalancing Voices, Authority and Engagement
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article reviews the "Northern Ireland: Living with The Troubles" exhibition, on display in the Imperial War Museum in London between May 2023 and January 2024. It was the first time the museum dedicated a temporary exhibition to the Northern Irish conflict, and the first of its kind in a major museum in Great Britain. This article retraces the genealogy and development of the project in an environment where the Northern Irish conflict continues to be contentious-in British society at large where engagement with the history and the legacy of the conflict is still limited, or at the Imperial War Museum itself with its historical connection to the British armed forces. A virtual visit of the exhibition is given through a detailed description of its layout and contents and the analysis focuses on how its curatorial choices attempted a new balance in the distribution of voices, authority and engagement between contents, museum and visitors.
