5‐Nitramino‐3‐Trifluoromethyl‐1 H −1,2,4‐Triazole (JZX‐1) and its Energetic Salts: Fluorinated Energetic Materials Derived Entirely from Commodity Chemicals

Type: article
Abstract: Energetic molecules that feature fluorine are of serious synthetic interest for energetic chemists. Important properties to energetic chemists, specifically higher density, lower sensitivity, higher thermal stability, and better energetic performance, are all greatly enhanced with the replacement of hydrogen with fluorine. Incorporation of fluorine into energetic materials, however, requires exotic, expensive, or dangerous reagents such as hydrogen fluoride (HF) or Selectfluor, which severely limits the potential use‐cases for these materials. A potential workaround to this problem is to have the fluorine and fluorine‐containing functional groups pre‐built into the energetic backbone of the material. Herein is described in detail the synthesis pathway to 5‐nitramino‐3‐trifluoromethyl‐1 H −1,2,4‐triazole (JZX‐1) and its energetic salts, an energetic fluorinated material derived entirely from commodity chemicals.
