Biologic outcomes in patients with severe asthma and clinically relevant allergy in the CHRONICLE study

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background: Several mAb biologic therapies are approved for the treatment of severe asthma. There are limited data examining biologic outcomes in patients with allergy that has been clinically confirmed to exacerbate their asthma symptoms. Objective: Our aim was to assess rates of asthma exacerbations, exacerbation-related emergency department (ED) visits, and exacerbation-related hospitalizations before and after biologic initiation among adults with severe asthma and confirmed clinically relevant allergy. Methods: CHRONICLE was an observational study of subspecialist-treated US adults with severe asthma. Annualized rates of asthma exacerbations, exacerbation-related ED visits, and exacerbation-related hospitalizations (6 months before and after initiation of biologic treatment) were compared for patients who had clinician-confirmed clinically relevant allergy and regular exposure to relevant asthma-exacerbating allergens and were enrolled between February 2018 and February 2024. Results: < .0001]) biologics. Conclusion: Among this cohort of US subspecialist-treated adults with severe asthma and clinically relevant allergy, biologics decreased the rates of exacerbations, exacerbation-related ED visits, and exacerbation-related hospitalizations, regardless of biologic subgroup.
