A Light-Dependent Resistor Based Embedded Image Acquisition System for use in Low-Resolution Application-Specific Data Processing
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: As automation continues to become more prevalent in industry and consumer applications, the demand for advanced sensor systems has risen.Consequently, research within the field of image processing systems has become more valuable than ever before. While these imaging systems can range in complexity with some performing high-level work like autonomous inspections, it is important to recognize the other end of the spectrum. In some cases, rudimentary imaging capability is desired within systems that do not possess ample processing potential such as single-chip microprocessors. It is in these specific cases that a simpler camera system is desirable; this is the design application of this embedded imaging solution. In this study, a cost-effective camera was designed and built to record low-resolution images. It was designed to interface with a wide range of single-chip computers with very limited computational resources. When developing this single-board imaging device, several design criteria were taken into consideration.Given single-chip processors' lack of IO pins, the camera Journal of Undergraduate Research, Vol. 25 (2025) 13 contains only one transmission wire, and it can send all data over this single analog connection. The system is also efficient and consumes very little power. It is important to note that while an arbitrary sensor resolution has been used for the development of this hardware, this design approach can be scaled to any size to make larger sensors with the introduction of some additional componentry.
