Diplomacy, Sovereignty, and Realism

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article explores the application of Realist theory in International Relations‎ to Serbia’s foreign policy, with a focus on President Aleksandar Vučić’s‎2023 speech at the United Nations General Assembly. The speech, which emphasizes ‎state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interest, is analyzed ‎through a Realist lens, highlighting Serbia’s diplomatic balancing act ‎between the European Union, Russia, and China. The study examines how ‎Serbia navigates competing global interests while defending its territorial‎ claims, particularly in Kosovo. By employing diplomacy as a tool for survival,‎ Vučić’s approach demonstrates core Realist principles such as power ‎politics, the limits of international law, and the pursuit of national interests in ‎a multipolar world. The article also discusses the challenges Serbia faces in‎ maintaining this strategic balance amidst evolving global power dynamics.‎‎
