Nuclear medicine technologists’ perceptions on role extension in South Africa

Year: 2025

Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Many countries have embraced role extension in radiography to address the rising demand for medical imaging procedures alongside a shortage of specialists. In developed countries, the implementation of role extension has led to shorter patient waiting times, reduced healthcare costs, improved service delivery, increased job satisfaction among radiographers, and expanded opportunities for career development. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the perceptions of nuclear medicine technologists (NMTs) in South Africa (SA) regarding role extension. METHODS: The study employed a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional design, focusing on 298 NMTs who were registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). A self-developed online questionnaire was disseminated via Google Forms to gather data. Participants were provided with alternative answers to choose from, as well as a chance to contribute further information. Based on the reviewed literature, the questionnaire asked NMTs about their demographics and perceptions of role extension. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the collected data. RESULTS: A total of 81 NMTs responded to the online questionnaire. The majority of NMTs, n = 64 (79 %) expressed their willingness to role extend, n = 4 (4.9 %) were unwilling, and n = 13 (16 %) were uncertain. Among those willing to role extend, no = 67 (82.7 %) were willing to do so through an accredited qualification, n = 6 (7.4 %) were not and n = 8 (9.9 %) were unsure. Regarding those that preferred in-house training, n = 68 (84 %) preferred this approach, while n = 5 (6.2 %) did not, and n = 8 (9.9 %) were uncertain. CONCLUSION: The NMTs who participated in this study demonstrated a strong willingness to extend their roles by pursuing accredited qualifications or engaging in-house training. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Enhanced patient care, improved job satisfaction and career development for radiographers.
