Optimizing Boosting for Faster Calorimetric Measurement of High-Efficiency Electric Machines
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: High-efficiency electric drivetrain components require accurate loss measurements, for which calorimetric methods offer superior precision but suffer from long stabilization times. This work introduces a boosting technique that accelerates stabilization by temporarily adjusting device settings such as speed and torque before settling into the target operating point. The approach is demonstrated on a 109 kW Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine with advanced cooling, evaluated at 13 operating points. Optimized boosting settings for a bang-bang control strategy are determined using a thermal model of the device. On average, boosting is applied for 24% of the time to reach steady state and reduces the total measurement duration from 4.2 hours to 2.6 hours, a 39% improvement, while maintaining accuracy. The method is generic in formulation and offers a promising solution for faster calorimetric loss measurements of high-efficiency electric drivetrain components.
