Curcumin: A Multifaceted Phytochemical with Therapeutic Potential and Pharmacological Applications
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a well-known Indian spice with powerful medicinal properties, mainly due to a compound called curcumin. Curcumin, along with its related compounds DMC and BDMC, is responsible for turmeric’s yellow color and its wide range of health benefits. This natural substance has been found to help with many health issues like inflammation, infections, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and even mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Despite its potential, curcumin doesn’t dissolve well in water, which makes it harder for the body to absorb. However, when taken with piperine (from black pepper), its absorption improves significantly. In recent years, scientists have developed new ways, like using nanoparticles and combining curcumin with other medicines, to boost its effectiveness.
