Design and build an air temperature conditioning device for characterizing heating resistors in low-temperature conditions for human breathing

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: An essential function of the human respiratory system is the conditioning of inspired air. The upper respiratory tract performs this conditioning by heating, humidifying, and filtering the air entering the nose. For a healthy person, the air entering the nostrils depends on the ambient air temperature and humidity. The nasal vestibule temperature is 34 °C and 37 °C starts from the nasal vestibule. However, natural air conditioning can be ineffective for individuals with respiratory comorbidities or those in low or variable-temperature environments. An electronic prototype of an artificial nostril (AN) system was designed and built to mimic the thermal air conditioning of a natural nostril. This device was used to characterize the power requirements, experimental conditions, and technical specifications needed for a Joule heating resistor (Jhr) to achieve adequate temperature conditioning for healthy human breathing in adverse environments. The primary function of the Jhr is to heat the inspired air, enabling the respiratory tract to perform thermal air conditioning in cold environments. This work aims to develop an innovative device that reduces the adverse effects of respiratory diseases worsened by environmental conditions.
