Development of a methodology for evaluating the susceptibility of naval surface ships based on naval engagement simulation

Type: article
Abstract: The naval ship susceptibility is a major indicator of the survivability and operational performance in an engagement environment. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate susceptibility with quantitative and reliable methodologies that consider various factors in the engagement environment. In previous studies, the deterministic susceptibility evaluation methodology was mainly applied to a single naval ship. However, these approaches are limited by the engagement environment simplification, static environment assumption, and consideration of only limited factors. These limitations are overcome in this study by proposed a new methodology that combines stochastic modeling and discrete event simulation to evaluate the susceptibility in an actual engagement environment. The proposed methodology allows for the design and operational aspects of ship susceptibility reduction based on engagement scenarios. In addition, compared to previous susceptibility analysis methodologies, the proposed methodology is demonstrated to be feasible for engagement susceptibility evaluation. Ultimately, we present the case study for the implementation of susceptibility reduction strategies.
