3 Health Crises in the African Continent
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The African continent has faced numerous health crises, including endemic diseases, pandemics, and epidemics. These crises have had significant impacts across various sectors, highlighting the need for greater cooperation and concerted efforts to manage them. Anthropology, an interdisciplinary science with deep connections to the medical field, is particularly effective in studying and analyzing health and disease within different societal contexts. However, despite its potential, anthropology has not been fully recognized as an essential interdisciplinary science. A key reason for this is the widespread lack of awareness regarding the importance of anthropology and its role in addressing health crises. As a result, many countries have marginalized the contributions of anthropology in this area. The aim of this study is to explore the critical role of anthropology in understanding and responding to health crises in African societies, drawing on its notable contributions during various epidemics and pandemics in the continent. The study also seeks to identify the key factors that have led to the marginalization of anthropology in addressing health crises in Africa and to examine the major challenges that hinder anthropological work in this field, as informed by the relevant literature and anthropological studies conducted across the continent.
