1 Civil Work in Yemen
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that support the conditions of Yemeni citizens aim to assist official agencies and institutions in their developmental roles in various political, economic, social, cultural, environmental domains. These institutions have a long history, since their numbers and areas of operation dates back to the British occupation of Yemen. However, since 2011, Yemen has been caught in a conflict between the legitimate government and the Iranian-backed Houthi group. The Houthis have sought to control civil work in their territories with a negative impact on these institutions hindering their ability to serve the Yemeni people. This study examines the current state of NGOs in Yemen and identifies their areas of operation and the challenges they face. It also proposes strategies to address these challenges, enlarge their scope, and enhance their performance in providing services to the Yemeni people, who continue to suffer due to the Houthi group’s rejection of the peace process and refusal to reinstate the legitimate government of Yemen.
