Evaluation of Voids in Endodontic Treatment via Different Obturation Techniques Using CT: A Comparative Study

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Objective: This study evaluates the prevalence and distribution of voids in root canal obturations performed using different obturation techniques, assessed through computed tomography (CT). Methods: A total of 60 extracted human teeth were divided into three groups (n = 20) based on the obturation technique: lateral compaction, continuous wave of condensation, and thermoplasticized injectable gutta-percha. CT scans were analyzed for void presence and distribution at the coronal, middle, and apical thirds of the root canal. Results: The continuous wave technique showed the least void occurrence, with statistically significant differences compared to lateral compaction. Thermoplasticized injectable techniques had better results than lateral compaction but were inferior to continuous wave techniques. Voids were most commonly observed in the apical third of all groups. Conclusion: The continuous wave of condensation is superior in minimizing void formation in root canal obturation, suggesting its potential as a preferred technique.
