Extensive Review of Materials for Next‐Generation Transparent Batteries and Their Design Strategies
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Transparent batteries represent a transformative advancement in energy‐storage technology, enabling the seamless integration of power systems into transparent and flexible electronic devices. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of materials, architectures, and design strategies for next‐generation transparent batteries. To meet the growing demand for portable, aesthetically appealing, and seamlessly integrated energy‐storage solutions, particularly in smart windows, wearable electronics, and transparent displays, it is necessary to address substantial challenges related to low energy density, scalability, and optical transparency. This work systematically reviews the development of transparent electrodes, including those based on graphene‐based materials, transparent conducting oxides, and 2D transition‐metal dichalcogenides. Furthermore, transparent electrolytes, separators, and device architectures optimized for light transmission are discussed, emphasizing their electrochemical performance, mechanical stability, and optical properties. Comparative analyses of state‐of‐the‐art transparent battery prototypes, including lithium‐ion, zinc–air, and solid‐state electrochromic batteries, are presented along with performance metrics and application‐specific evaluations. The review concludes by outlining critical research directions in scalable fabrication, enhanced durability, and multifunctional integration, positioning transparent batteries as key components of next‐generation integrated and visually unobtrusive electronics.
