Assessing the digital entrepreneurial policy and SME competitiveness in The Gambia
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Digital innovation is increasingly acknowledged as a pivotal factor influencing national economies and their competitive dynamics, serving as a fundamental component in the establishment of a sustainable competitive advantage. However, despite this promising potential, the performance output of entrepreneurship remains suboptimal, as indicated by current policy assessments, MoHERST & OACPS [1], and Sowe [2]; [3]. This study aims to critically evaluate the digital entrepreneurial competitiveness policy to enhance the output of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) programs within The Gambia. The assessment draws on secondary and primary data from the National Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy (2016–2025) and selected SMEs. As well as insights from the reports published by the International Trade Centre (ITC) in collaboration with the Gambia Investment and Export Promotion Agency (GIEPA). The findings illustrate an influential trend in digital innovation competitiveness; however, there exists an imperative to synchronise entrepreneurship policies and initiatives with the needs of SMEs. Enhancing these policies has the potential to fortify the business ecosystem, improve the quality of digital services, and broaden e-commerce opportunities. Consequently, fostering digital innovation among SMEs could catalyse economic growth and enhance the nation’s competitive standing within the global marketplace.
