«Tan lucidos, tan costosos». Música, fiesta y ceremonial en Fontibón (Nuevo Reino de Granada)
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Fontibón was one of the most important Indian villages in the New Kingdom of Granada, as it was the last stop on the dangerous journey from Cartagena de Indias to Santafé, today Bogotá. Integrated into the royal crown, its care was entrusted to the Jesuits, who settled in the town in 1608. The arrival of the Jesuits brought about a total transformation of the social and cultural dynamics that had been taking place in the town until that time, including the creation of the choir school, which had a special significance, as well as the numerous celebrations that took place for different reasons. The aim of this article is to analyse these transformations, highlighting the quality of the musicians as well as the complexity of the ceremonies. The results obtained make us understand that in Fontibón a frenetic activity took place, which is quite different from those developed in other towns in the Cundinamarca-Boyacá territory.
