Ciprofloxacin‐Associated Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome ( PRES )

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: ABSTRACT Ciprofloxacin‐induced PRES has been rarely documented, with only three previous cases reported including one 16‐year‐old adolescent and two adults. We report the first case in an early adolescent female (age 14 years) who developed PRES after 5 days of ciprofloxacin therapy for respiratory infection. The patient presented with progressive headache and generalized tonic–clonic seizures, with MRI demonstrating characteristic bilateral posterior parietal and occipital vasogenic edema. Ciprofloxacin was immediately discontinued and replaced with ceftriaxone, resulting in complete neurological recovery. Follow‐up MRI at 10 days showed complete resolution of edema, confirming the reversible nature of this rare but serious adverse effect. This case represents the youngest female reported with ciprofloxacin‐induced PRES and emphasizes the need for heightened awareness in pediatric populations.
