Novel surgical trick for femoral rotation: matching lesser trochanter profile using common features of retrograde intramedullary nails

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Femoral shaft fractures are common injuries frequently associated with high energy trauma. During surgical fixation, careful attention to length, alignment, and rotation is essential, as inaccuracy can cause significant patient debility and dissatisfaction. Midshaft femur fractures with extensive comminution are especially challenging regarding rotation. One of the most common ways to assess rotation is matching the contralateral lesser trochanter profile. This technical trick describes a method of using the interlocking screw holes of the intramedullary device to provide an easier method to match the lesser trochanter profile.
