A Cross-sectional Examination of Burnout in Physicians and Nurse Practitioners in Hawaii

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess burnout and work-life factors among physicians and nurse practitioners (NPs) in a large medical group. METHODS: The Maslach Burnout Inventory and Areas of Worklife Survey were distributed to physicians and NPs in a large medical group in Hawaii between January and March 2024. RESULTS: Among 604 participants, physicians reported higher emotional exhaustion and depersonalization than NPs. Gender-diverse and underrepresented racial groups reported lower work-life alignment and higher burnout. Correlational studies resulted in moderate associations between emotional exhaustion and workload alignment, and between depersonalization and values. CONCLUSIONS: Burnout in physicians and NPs varies by role, gender, race, and years of practice. Tailored interventions addressing areas of work-life factors alignment are needed to improve clinician burnout and well-being.
