Sublethal effects of cyantraniliprole on Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae)

Abstract: Background: Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), commonly known as the diamondback moth, is a significant pest of cruciferous crops. Insecticides are still the most direct and effective method for controlling P. xylostella . Cyantraniliprole is a diamide insecticide and has demonstrated significant efficacy against Lepidoptera pests, including P. xylostella . Methods: This study used the feed-mixing toxicity method to treat third-instar larvae to investigate the sublethal concentrations (LC 10 , LC 20 and LC 30 ) of cyantraniliprole on the growth and development of the F 0 and F 1 generations of the P. xylostella . Results: The LC 50 of cyantraniliprole against P. xylostella was 0.069 mg/L. When the third-instar larvae were treated with three sublethal concentrations (LC 10 , LC 20 , and LC 30 ) of cyantraniliprole, the duration of the fourth instar larval stage and pupal stage was noticeably prolonged in the F 0 generation. Additionally, significant reductions were observed in pupal weight, pupation rate, emergence rate, and fecundity per female; however, adult longevity did not differ significantly from the control group. Further observations of the F 1 generation indicated that the sublethal treatments had minimal effects on their biological characteristics. Although the pupal weight was significantly reduced in females, other aspects, such as emergence rate, fecundity per female, developmental process and adult longevity, were not significantly affected. Conclusion: Treatment of P. xylostella larvae with sublethal concentrations of cyantraniliprole resulted in significant effects on their growth, development and fecundity, ultimately inhibiting the population of P. xylostella .
