Application of lung ultrasound techniques in the diagnosis of lung lesions: A narrative review

Year: 2025
Type: review
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Lung ultrasound (LUS) techniques, including transesophageal lung ultrasound, ultrasound elastography, contrast-enhanced ultrasound, speckle tracking, Doppler imaging, and anatomical M-mode ultrasound, have become increasingly common in recent years. METHODS: Literature was retrieved via PubMed from January 1985 to May 2025 using the following descriptors: Lung ultrasound OR lung ultrasonography and elastography OR contrast enhanced OR speckle tracking OR Doppler OR M-mode. Inclusion criteria were: (1) Use of lung ultrasound; (2) Evaluation of lung lesions using the aforementioned techniques. Exclusion criteria were: (1) Under the age of 18; (2) No English-language full text. Study quality was evaluated using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2) tool. RESULTS: These techniques expand LUS diagnostic capability and improve diagnostic accuracy, although limitations still exist. CONCLUSION: New LUS techniques help compensate for its limitations in diagnosing lung lesions and strengthen quantitative diagnostic performance; however, further research is required to validate these findings.
