Student engagement and barriers to internationalization at home through extracurricular activities: a cross-sectional study among health science students

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Internationalization at home (IaH) refers to the intentional incorporation of international and intercultural dimensions into the domestic educational experience. While IaH initiatives have been increasingly implemented at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City (UMP HCMC), empirical evidence regarding student participation, associated determinants, and perceived barriers remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate levels of student engagement in IaH activities, identify influencing factors, and explore barriers to participation. A cross-sectional study was conducted from June 2024 to June 2025 among 4,588 undergraduate students at UMP HCMC. Data were collected via a structured online questionnaire. Statistical analyses included chi-square tests, Cramér’s V, t-tests, and residual analysis. Only 7.9% of students had previously participated in IaH activities, while 63.3% expressed interest. Participation status was significantly associated with gender, grade point average, training performance, foreign language proficiency, faculty, and postgraduate plans (p<0.05). The most cited barriers among non-participants were lack of information (37.7%), language concerns (33.6%), and scheduling conflicts. Even among interested or previously participating students, challenges such as limited opportunities and financial support persisted. Despite low participation rates, student interest in IaH is substantial. Addressing key barriers through improved communication and institutional support may foster greater engagement and advance internationalization of medical education in Vietnam.
