Paediatric pneumonia: a call for point-of-care diagnostics and prognostics

Abstract: In observance of World Pneumonia Day on November 12, we highlight the continued unmet need for point-of-care diagnostics and prognostics to identify and guide management of lower respiratory infections in children. Globally each year, pneumonia, a lower respiratory infection, which can be caused by multiple different organisms, including bacteria and viruses, results in an estimated 37·8 million incident episodes and 502 000 deaths in children younger than 5 years.1 Pneumonia remains the most common and deadly paediatric infectious disease worldwide.
