Abstract: Background Plesiomonas shigelloides typically causes gastroenteritis but rarely leads to invasive infections such as endocarditis. We report the first case of P. shigelloides endocarditis in the literature. Case summary A 74-year-old male presented with seizure and bacteraemia following consumption of raw seafood. Echocardiography revealed mitral valve perforation with severe regurgitation. Blood cultures grew P. shigelloides, confirming endocarditis requiring valve surgery. Discussion This represents the first documented case of P. shigelloides endocarditis. The pathogen’s ability to cause invasive disease relates to its virulence factors.
