OA2399. Risk factors for falls among adults aged 65+ hospitalized with fractures in orthopedic or spinal clinics
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Background Falls in elderly populations frequently lead to severe complications. This study aimed to identify key risk factors to guide interventions reducing falls and improving quality of life in one of the EU’s most aging countries. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from January–April 2022 at the University Hospital of Heraklion, Greece, involving 76 patients aged ≥65 hospitalized for fractures after falls. Data were collected via questionnaire on demographics, lifestyle, fall history, comorbidities, and medication use. The HOME FAST tool assessed environmental hazards. Multivariable regression determined associations between risk factors and fall risk. Results Two main profiles emerged. The first included older age, use of walking aids, hip fractures, recent falls, and high home fall risk. The second involved female gender, comorbidities, indoor falls, need for assistance in daily activities, and higher body weight. Hip fracture patients had a significantly higher frequency of elevated fall risk (29.3% vs. 8.6%, p = 0.024; OR = 4.4, 95% CI: 1.1–17.2). Recent falls (32.4% vs. 9.5%, p = 0.013; OR = 4.5, 95% CI: 1.3–15.9), walking aid use (32.4% vs. 7.7%, p = 0.007; OR = 5.8, 95% CI: 1.5–22.5), and need for help with daily activities (30.2% vs. 6.1%, p = 0.009; OR = 6.7, 95% CI: 1.4–32.3) were also strongly associated with increased risk. Conclusions Falls in older adults are multifactorial, demanding integrated prevention strategies addressing environmental hazards, medical management, and education for healthy aging. Key messages • Comprehensive fall prevention programs, including medication review and home hazard assessment, are essential to reduce injuries in older adults. • Public awareness and state-led initiatives on balance, strength training, and safe environments can significantly lower fall-related fractures and enhance quality of life.
