Symmetry-enforced state revival in time-varying photonic lattices

Abstract: In quantum mechanics, a state can reoccur at a later time during evolution. This phenomenon, also known as state revival, holds potential for advancing information storage and control of quantum systems. Determining the conditions under which such revivals can be achieved for arbitrary input states is a complex task. In this work, we investigate quantum walks, where input states are subject to a time-periodic sequence of unitary operations. Through theoretical analysis, we show that these temporal modulations, combined with simple symmetry conditions, may guarantee the occurrence of exact revivals. On this basis, we derive a recipe for state revival, which is then experimentally tested by implementing recurrences of a photonic quantum walk in coupled optical-fiber loops. Our results provide an alternative view on the mechanisms behind state revival and enrich the toolbox for controlling time-dependent quantum walks by an adaptable scheme.
