Risk Factors Among School Student Motorcyclists in Malaysia: a Systematic Review for Safer Youth Mobility
Year: 2025
Type: review
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: School students in Malaysia, particularly those who ride motorcycles, encounter many obstacles during their daily journey to school, which are contributed by individual, environmental, and system factors. This study aims to identify and analyze the risk factors, including unsafe riding behaviors, among school student motorcyclists in Malaysia. This study systematically reviewed 20 academic articles following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol and rigorously assessed them using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). The findings discover four groups of themes that become the factors that contribute to road accidents among school students, which are: i) risk exposure, ii) safer mode of transportation, iii) accident rate, and iv) injury severity. These findings offer a deeper understanding of the risks faced by school student motorcyclists. The study recommends stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, enhanced road safety education among students, and improved road infrastructure as strategic measures to reduce accident risks. These findings are instrumental in developing a safer youth mobility strategy that addresses accident reduction and promotes more sustainable and inclusive access to education for school students in Malaysia. These findings align with the Malaysian Road Safety Plan 2022-2030, which targets a 50 percent reduction in road traffic fatalities by 2030.
