Abstract: This article invites readers to sensually and intellectually explore what kind of literacy is urgently needed in the Anthropocene. As the rapid technological evolution and anthropogenic climate change upend the material and sensory landscapes of the world, I tap into the archives of sensory knowledge to sense and make sense of the world that is changing at an unsettling pace and scale. The archive of sensory knowledge I tap into is that of the relationship between the body and air. I extend the notion of “reading the air” in Japanese communicative practice to seek multisensory ways of reading the world as an enmeshment of the social and the ecological. I advance a thermoceptive reading of the world to cultivate air awareness as a form of critical consciousness in the Anthropocene.Footnote1
