Libraries as a ‘Third Place’ for Remote Workers: A Survey of Australian Workplace Preferences
Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: As remote work becomes more common, many workers are seeking “third places” -environments outside the home and office – to work and connect. This study explores the role of public libraries as workplaces for remote workers. Drawing on survey data from 225 remote workers, we examine who uses libraries, how often, and why. Around 8% of respondents use libraries for at least half a day per week, while a third would consider doing so. Libraries are valued for quietness, affordability, and a sense of community, but limited privacy remains a barrier. Findings highlight the library’s potential to meet workforce needs.
