Secondary Prevention

Year: 2025
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: Secondary prevention tackles the difficult challenge of addressing the sequelae of IPV, during its “early stages,” both providing interventions so that IPV doesn’t happen again and before more acute or critical tertiary services are needed. Historically, secondary prevention has relied upon universal screening strategies leading to appropriate interventions. Today, health care providers are continuing to use screening approaches, which are disclosure driven, and recognizing that universal education and harm reduction are also promising for addressing IPV. This chapter discusses harm reduction and screening-based approaches, including how they can be implemented in clinical practices. It reviews screening approaches, highlights some of the limitations of disclosure-driven practice, introduces harm reduction strategies, and concludes with additional IPV interventions as examples of secondary prevention.
