Laser-Assisted Endodontic Disinfection: A Survey of Dental Practitioners’ Awareness and Attitudes

Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Objective: To assess dental practitioners' awareness, knowledge, and attitudes regarding the application of laser technology in endodontic disinfection. Design: Cross-sectional survey. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted in the Department of Operative Dentistry & Endodontics, Bacha Khan College of Dentistry, Mardan, over a six-month period from January to June 2023. Materials and Methods: A validated, structured questionnaire was distributed to 100 dental practitioners selected through convenience sampling. Demographics, awareness, knowledge, and attitudes toward laser-assisted endodontic disinfection were recorded. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including regression analysis, were performed. Results: Awareness of laser disinfection was reported by 85% of practitioners, but only 40% had formal training. While 80% acknowledged antibacterial efficacy, 65% mistakenly believed lasers replace irrigants. Positive attitudes were common, with 80% supporting inclusion of lasers in dental curricula. Cost (75%) and lack of confidence (70%) were major barriers. Regression analysis indicated that years of practice (p=0.001), specialization (p=0.001), and prior laser training (p<0.001) significantly predicted knowledge scores. Conclusion: Dental practitioners demonstrate favorable attitudes but limited knowledge regarding endodontic laser disinfection. Prior laser training strongly predicts knowledge, indicating the importance of structured educational programs. Training integration into curricula and subsidized equipment access may enhance adoption.
