Association between Caprini score and postoperative venous thromboembolism in lung cancer

Abstract: The relationship of Caprini score with the incidence of postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) among lung cancer patients remains uncertain now. This study aimed to identify the effect of Caprini score in predicting postoperative VTE in lung cancer. Several databases were searched up to April 11, 2025. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were combined and subgroup analyses by tumor type and surgery type were performed. All statistical analysis were conducted using the STATA 17.0 software. Fifteen studies were included, with the incidence rate of postoperative VTE of 11.86% (500/4215). Pooled results demonstrated that higher Caprini score was significantly associated with increased risk of VTE (OR=2.80, 95% CI: 2.04-3.84, P<0.001). For deep vein thrombosis (DVT), elevated Caprini score was also a significant predictor (OR=1.72, 95% CI: 1.09-2.71, P=0.020). Then subgroup based the types of tumor and surgery further verified above findings. Caprini score was significantly related to the risk of postoperative VTE in lung cancer and patients with an elevated Caprini score predicted higher incidence of VTE.
