Abstract: In this paper, the hot deformation behavior of S55C steel was investigated by Gleeble-3180 thermomechanical simulator. The deformation was conducted within a temperature range of 850–1000°C and a strain rate range of 0.01–10s–1. A constitutive equation and a dynamic recrystallization (DRX) kinetic model of the experimental steel were established. Hot processing maps at different strains were generated to identify the optimal hot working parameters. The results show that the flow stress decreases with increasing deformation temperature and increases with increasing strain rate. The average activation energy of hot deformation (Q) was calculated to be 332.88kJ/mol. The volume fraction of DRX grains increases in a sigmoid-shape curve with increasing strain. The hot deformation mechanism of the experimental steel follows a hybrid recrystallizion mechanism, which combined both continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX). Detailed microstructural analysis under different deformation conditions reveals that the relationship between Zener Hollomon (Z) parameter and DRX grain size, Additionally, a DRX grain size model was established. As the Z value increases, both the grain size and grain aspect ratios decrease significantly, while the fraction of low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) decreases rapidly under conditions with higher Z values. These observations suggest that LAGBs evolve into high angle grain boundaries (HAGBs), and the formation of equiaxed grains is accelerated. The optimal hot working parameters for the experimental steel are a deformation temperature of 900-950°C, a strain rate in the range of 0.01-0.1s-1, and a efficiency of power dissipation of 34–40%.
