First experimental demonstration of Gamma-ray LiDAR with a quasi-monoenergetic photon beam
Year: 2024
Type: other
Abstract: We present the first demonstration of Gamma-ray LiDAR using a nearly monoenergetic photon source at the Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator center (BELLA). This technique has the potential for 3D imaging from one side, by registering the time of flight of backscattered MeV photons using highly segmented precision timing detectors. Using a prototype system, we demonstrate meaningful backscatter time of flight signatures, including reconstructions of depth in multi-layer targets, and measurements of curvature in a spherical target. In this contribution, we discuss the preliminary results and future development needed to further develop this technique.
