’How to strengthen Immunology education in low-resource Countries?: case of Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa’ 2585

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Description Immunology is a critical field that drives advances in healthcare, especially in countries facing high burdens of infectious diseases and emerging health challenges. However, in many low-resource countries, one of the major challenges in improving immunology education is the lack of qualified teachers and the teaching of immunology is underdeveloped. In Côte d’Ivoire, literature on current research and solutions related to immunology education are very limited. There are significant disparities in infrastructure, resources, and training. Only two universities in the entire country have immunology departments, which are poorly equipped, with just three professors and six assistants (senior and junior). The participation rate of trainers in continuing education is almost negligible, as is international collaboration and the number of active mentorships programs. To strengthen immunology education in low-resource settings, a structured approach is essential. Enhancing collaboration between institutions in low-resource settings and established research centers is key. Programs that offer fellowships, exchange programs, and mentorship opportunities can foster skill transfer, allowing local educators to receive advanced training and bring it back to their institutions. By focusing on these disparities, low-resource countries can significantly enhance the quality of immunology education, ultimately contributing to the broader global scientific and healthcare communities.
