Abstract: Description Immunology is often taught through individual chapters, each focusing on a specific component of the immune system. While this approach helps students learn the material in manageable segments, they often struggle to see how the various pieces fit into the broader picture. One effective strategy to address this is to incorporate journal article discussions centered around a unifying theme. At the beginning of the semester, students vote on a theme—such as HIV or the gut-brain-microbiota axis—that will guide the course. After each unit, a journal article linking the topic of the unit to the theme is discussed in class. These themed discussions have proven to enhance students’ ability to apply concepts, integrate knowledge, communicate effectively, and solve problems. Additionally, because students help choose the theme, they are more invested in the process, leading to increased engagement. Topic Categories Immunology Education and Communication (EDU)
