Patient-centered learning in undergraduate immunology enhances concept application and fosters empathy in future healthcare students 2032

Abstract: Description Active learning is essential for engaging students and promoting deeper understanding, especially in complex fields like immunology. This project presents a patient-centered learning model used in undergraduate immunology courses to facilitate active engagement and enhance comprehension of immunologic principles while preparing students for careers in medicine. In this model, students are introduced to a patient at the start of each new topic or chapter, followed by a progressive, case-based exploration of the disease. Each step builds on prior knowledge, allowing students to integrate key immunological concepts. By connecting lecture content to real-world contexts, this approach keeps the patient central to learning, fostering both a deeper understanding of the science and greater empathy. The instructor serves as a facilitator, guiding students through the case while encouraging critical thinking and collaboration. The entire process is housed in the course LMS, integrating resources, discussions, and assessments. At the end of the semester, students will be surveyed to evaluate the impact of the patient-centered case approach on their learning. This feedback, along with insights into the structure and delivery of the case-building process, will be shared along with practical strategies for implementing patient-centered case studies and developing active learning environments in face-to-face, undergraduate courses.
