Comparative Evaluation of Accuracy of CBCT and Bitewing Radiographs in Dental Caries Detection: An In Vitro Study

Year: 2025

Abstract: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a novel technique that obtains volume data by rotating a cone-shaped X-ray beam in reciprocal motion with a 2D receiver. This approach collects a lot of high-quality data with a small dose increase, and in most circumstances, this dose increase is acceptable to get correct information. The manufacturer, exposure conditions, and observer skill all affect CBCT dosages.5 Compared to panoramic X-rays or dental periapical films, CBCT scanners are more accurate.Cone-beam computed tomography is regarded as a useful supplementary tool for proximal caries identification. There is no distortion, superimposition, or magnification in CBCT images.Other benefits of CBCT images include ease of use, 3D image reconstruction, and the ability to display various parts in numerous planes. Therefore, by employing CBCT, a small increase in radiation exposure can yield useful information both qualitatively and quantitatively.11 Sagittal, coronal, and axial images with submillimeter resolutions can be obtained with CBCT.Compared
