Curating gene alias relationships to resolve gene symbol ambiguity

Abstract: Gene nomenclature supports clear and consistent communication about genomic knowledge. What happens when the tool used to clarify, leads to ambiguity? We see this occur in gene symbols when one gene is represented by multiple gene symbols or the same symbol is used to represent multiple genes. Defining the relationships between genes and the symbols that are used to represent them will help resolve ambiguities that can arise in applications that organize data by gene symbol and in manual literature review.
